Linkding – Selfhost bookmarks manager

I’m annoyed that I’m not able to sync browser bookmarks easily across different browsers. I’m using an iPhone and iPad, so the main browser I’m using on the phone or tablet is Safari. On my PC or Mac, I’m using Firefox.

On Firefox or even Chrome, I can easily sync bookmarks by using Floccus. It’s very easy to setup and it supports Google Drive and Nextcloud to sync bookmarks. The one browser giving me headache is this Safari, Floccus doesn’t support this browser and there is no easy way to sync bookmarks between Firefox.

The currently solution I’m using is, I have a Windows VM on my Mac, and I run iCloud bookmarks sync from this VM, then I can have all my bookmarks sync across all the browsers that I’m using, very stupid but it works.

I always wanted a better solution for this problem and I found Linkding. It is a selfhosted bookmarks manager. Very easy to setup, I just need to set the port that I want use in the docker compose file and its all ready to go.

Linkding doesn’t support folders like Firefox did, it uses Tag to group different bookmarks. After I imported all my bookmarks from Firefox and spent few mins to adding all the tags, now I have all my bookmarks that accessible everywhere. There is no need to sync to any browser anymore. All I need to do is just go to Linkding and click whatever bookmarks I want. I wish I found it earlier!

Tired of switching browsers

I guess, many are like me, disappointed by the recent controversy on Firefox, but is there a true alternative browser that is not profiling you or selling your data? Maybe it is better to settle with a known bad guy rather than some fake good guy?
